Water is a Beverage!!!

Originally, when I'd walk up to a table I'd ask if they'd like something to drink... I soon realized that people hear "drink" and think alcoholic beverage... unfortunate, but oh well...

So, I decided to change "Would you like anything to drink?" to "Can I start you off with a beverage?"... figured that would be safe. Guess again...

I still get people giving me the "But it's 11.30 in the morning"-look before shaking their heads and turning away from me and back to the menu... better yet, the rest of the table will order drinks (non-alcoholic) and when you bring them out the person who didn't want a "beverage" gives you a wtf-look and requests a water... like I'm supposed to know that he was thirsty after all and not ordering a beverage implied he wanted a water.

Guess what my stare is implying...

Ha, ha. I've totally done that. It's funny as long as the person who didn't order a drink in not paying.

i think we all develop the stare... that's all we've got really... sadly.

I will actually reply to most tables, not all... I believe water is a beverage with a chuckle & a smile. They learn something new & I get my point across!!!!

yeah, maybe i could try that... think that, towards the end of my shift, it might be hard to do though... i find that i'm not as patient with people as i used to be... especially towards the end of a long shift...
